My timeline

My Work and Career

I’ve created many therapy courses and concepts throughout my career.  The Timeline below outlines my most significant milestones and achievements to date, the most recent of which is BrainWorking Recursive Therapy® a totally new style of psychotherapy with its roots firmly in the latest discoveries in Neuroscience.

1989

This is when it all began as I opened the doors of my new consulting room – 2 rooms above an architect’s office in Leigh on Sea, Essex, UK. I had trained in more than one course, including the Professional Hypnotherapists Centre in Harley Street, London. My practice grew quite rapidly and by 1995, I was seeing close to 40 clients weekly – collossal in comparison with most practitioners today. But then, the fees charged for therapy were comaparitively modest, so we all had to see more clients to make a living!

1995

The beginning of my writing career, with the Easy Quit Smoking Programme – updated in 2007, still available from my hypnosense site, and still effective! Highly original in its day, relying on psychology as much as on hypnosis. Over the next couple of decades I wrote many more manuals of this sort with scripts and techniques for professional therapists – many of them are mentione on the Books page.

1996

The internet had got underway in the UK and though it was still considered little more than a novelty, it grabbed my attention and I bought several books on how to use it, then founded one of the first hypnotherapy sites in the UK – www.hypnosense.com. It’s still going strong and remains a great resource for hypnotherapists.

1997

Became a full member of the National Council of Psychotherapists (UK) and began research for the ‘Warriors, Settlers & Nomads’ concept for behavioural change without hypnosis. Eventually it was to become a book and a training course, and in retrospect it is evidently a direct forerunner of BWRT.

I also started writing a hypnotherapy training course at that time, a course which is still being taught in some schools and which incorporated a lot of psychology/psychotherapy alongside hypnosis.

1999

A book I had co-authored with one Georges Phillips, Rapid Cognitive Therapy was published. We had a party!

2000

January 2000 saw the doors of the Essex Institute open for the first time to an enthusiastic class of 9 people – this first run of the training could hardly have gone better and I knew I had discovered my forte – researching, writing, and training innovative material. I do look pretty pleased with myself in the below pic!

Also, the long awaited date of publication of the Warriors, Settlers and Nomads book arrived. We had a bigger party!

2002 – 2006

Became a Fellow and Senior Clinician of the National Council for Hypnotherapy.

Presented various subjects on several occasions at the National Guild of Hypnotists Annual Convention in the USA.

Wrote several hypnotherapy script books commencing with CRUCIAL! a collection of 11 inductions and 11 deepeners. Also composed several pieces of background music for therapy sessons.

‘HYPNOSIS: ‘Advanced Techniques in Hypnotherapy and Hypnoanalysis’ published.

2006 – 2008

Me at my official presentation of the MCGI

Achieved the award of Membership of the City & Guilds Institute of London (MCGI) for the creation of a professional training course for therapists in Psychosexual Dysfunction (Download the thesis).

Involved with the creation of Voluntary Self-Regulation for the field of Hypnotherapy via UKCHO (UK Confederation of Hypnotherapy Organisations) and the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (UK).  Also involved with the creation of the National Occupational Standards for Hypnotherapy.

Also created the coaching model, ‘SymbioDynamics’ (SymbioDynamics was a direct forerunner to BWRT but is no longer active.)

2009 – 2011

Awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Medicine and also Fellowship of the British National Register of Advanced Hypnotherapists

Inducted as a Freeman of the City of London.

Founded the National Register of Psychotherapists and Counsellors.

Began the research that was to eventually become BrainWorking Recursive Therapy®

‘7 Ways and 7 Days to Banish Your Anxiety’ published.

2012 – 2013

Announced as ‘IMDHA Educator of the Year 2012’ in May 2012.

Created and promoted BWRT and provided first live online training (in October 2013) to qualified therapists world-wide.  Hailed immediately as a ‘breakthrough therapy’.

South African Psycholgist Rafiq Lockhat, MA, was on that first training and became my research partner soon afterwards.

2014

Two best sellers published: ‘The Secret Life of Love and Sex‘ published, and ‘Smashing Depression‘

2015

Founded, with UK Government permission, The Institute of BrainWorking Recursive Therapyrenamed in 2018 to The Terence Watts BWRT Institute and in 2025 to The International BWRT Institute.

Trained South African and UK psychologists in the advanced level of BWRT (Level 2).

2016

Founded, with UK Government permission, The British BrainWorking Research Society, a society for the research and development of neuro-science based therapies and therapy modalities. This ceased function after only two years.

2017 – 2019

BWRT becomes Regulated Healthcare in South Africa

BWRT becomes regulated healthcare by the Health Professions Council of South Africa and later listed as required training for the Police Psychologists there.

Adopted for use by the South African armed forces to deal quickly with PTSD.

The First Annual BWRT World Congress was conducted in the UK in May 2017.

Trained South African Psychologists in the new BWRT Transformational Coaching programme in November 2017

2022

By now, many new training programmes have added to the stable, making  BWRT a full therapeutic modality in its own right, rather than an add on to other methdologies.

The book Reboot your Life with BrainWorking Recursive Therapy is published.

In this book you’ll discover the ‘how and why’ of the technique’s efficiency and, after an experiential exercise to whet your appetite, Terence then provides step-by-step guides to help you tackle a range of different challenges.

The sequence of therapy used in this book is identical to that which the professional BWRT therapist uses, though they employ slightly different techniques to enhance concentration and focus. The book also makes the self-therapy process easier for the reader by providing a customisable ‘text to record’ script for each procedure.

2023 – 2025

The University of Bergen, Norway restarts a study on the use of BWRT for non-complex Trauma, originally started in 2020 but stopped as a result of the Covid pandemic.

UK Government grants permission to trades as The International BWRT Insitute.

The Norwegian study is completed sucessfully and the outstanding results presented during the First Annual BWRTSA Congress in South Africa in September 2025
